Big Brain Shows Lesson Plan Episode 13 • March 1, 2026

Moon Magic, Animal Selfies, and Nature Helper Projects

Main Lesson Takeaway

"Careful observing and smart human choices—like watching the sky, taking wildlife photos, and building nature-friendly projects—help us understand and protect the natural world."

The Hook (Pre-Watch)

Ask the class before watching:

"Where have you noticed nature near your home or school, and what is one change people could make to help animals live safely there?"

Vocabulary Focus

occultation

When one space object moves in front of another and hides it from our view.

During an occultation, the Moon can briefly cover a planet so it looks like it disappeared.

orbiting

Moving in a path around something else, like going in a big circle.

The Moon is orbiting Earth, which is why it can slide across the sky and block Mercury for a short time.

framing

How you choose what will be inside your picture when you take a photo.

Good framing might place a fox on one side of the photo so you can still see the forest behind it.

habitat

The natural home where a plant or animal lives and finds what it needs.

A wetland habitat gives frogs water to swim in and muddy spots to hide their eggs.

Discussion & Reflection

Have students answer these questions after watching the episode.

1
If you could take one nature photo, what animal or plant would you hope to catch on camera?
2
What’s one thing humans could build to help animals travel safely where we live?
