Our first story zooms far, far out to Pluto, a small icy world at the edge of our solar system.
NASA’s Astronomy Picture of the Day for September 6 featured a portrait of Pluto made from data collected by the New Horizons spacecraft. New Horizons flew past Pluto in 2015, giving scientists their closest-ever look at this distant world.
But this picture is not colored exactly the way your eyes would see Pluto from a spacecraft window. It is an enhanced-color image. That means scientists use extra-strong colors to make differences on the surface easier to notice.
Think of it like using colored pencils to label a map. One color might help show icy areas. Another might help scientists compare different kinds of surface materials. Pluto’s famous heart-shaped region stands out in the image, too.
The heart shape is not really a drawing, of course. It is a huge bright region on Pluto’s surface. Scientists study places like that to learn how Pluto changes, freezes, and reshapes itself over time.
So today’s Pluto lesson is this: sometimes space pictures are not just pretty. They are tools. By changing the colors carefully, scientists can see patterns that might otherwise stay hidden.
STORY 2: A New Walking Shark Is Found Near Papua New Guinea
Our next story swims near Papua New Guinea, an island country in the Pacific Ocean, where researchers have identified a new species of walking shark.
Now, walking shark does not mean a shark strolling down the sidewalk in sneakers. These are small sharks that can use their fins to wiggle and push themselves along shallow seafloors. It looks a bit like a careful crawl.
The report says scientists identified a new species, which means researchers studied it closely enough to tell that it is different from other known walking sharks.
Walking sharks often live in shallow reef areas. In places like that, being able to move across the seafloor can be useful, especially in tight spaces among rocks, coral, or tide-pool-like areas.
This discovery is a reminder that the ocean is still full of animals people are only beginning to understand. Even today, scientists can find creatures that are new to science—not because the animal just appeared, but because humans had not officially described it before.

STORY 3: Galápagos Green Turtles Like Staying Close to Home

New reporting highlighted research on Galápagos green turtles. The research suggests these turtles may be less wander-y than many sea turtles. In other words, they may spend more time staying close to important local areas instead of traveling super long distances all the time.
Scientists are careful with words like “suggests” and “appears,” because animal movement can be complicated. Different turtles can behave differently, and researchers need lots of observations to understand the full picture.
But learning where turtles go is very important. If conservation teams know which beaches turtles use for nesting, and which nearby waters they use for feeding or resting, they can make better plans to protect those places.
Imagine if you were trying to protect a school playground, but you did not know where the playground was. First, you would need a map. Turtle tracking helps make that kind of map for nature.
So today, the Galápagos green turtles are teaching us that staying close to home can be a scientific clue. To protect an animal, we first need to understand the places it depends on.
