STORY 1: Utah Museum Celebrates the Tiny World of Bugs
Our first story starts very small—six legs small, antennae small, crawl-under-a-leaf small.
On Sunday, the Natural History Museum of Utah held BugFest, a special event all about insects and other tiny creatures. Families could meet experts, look at specimens, try crafts, and join workshops that helped explain why bugs matter.
Now, bugs may be tiny, but their jobs can be huge. Some insects help with pollination. That means they move pollen from flower to flower, helping plants make fruits and seeds. Other tiny creatures help with decomposition, which is a big word for nature’s clean-up process. When leaves, old wood, or other natural things break down, nutrients can return to the soil.
So instead of thinking, “Eek, a bug!” BugFest invited kids to ask, “What is this creature’s job?” A beetle, a butterfly, an ant, or a bee can all be part of an ecosystem, which is like a living neighborhood where plants, animals, fungi, soil, air, and water all connect.
Here’s your BigBrain question: if you could shrink down to bug size for one minute, what would you want to explore first—a flower, a log, or a patch of soil?
STORY 2: San Antonio Families Mix Art and Science at STEAM Sunday
Our next story takes us to San Antonio, Texas, where families visited the Witte Museum for a hands-on STEAM Sunday program called “Deep in the Art.”
STEAM stands for science, technology, engineering, art, and math. And this event was all about mixing those ideas together. Families explored Texas-inspired art, different materials, and creative making as part of the Witte Museum’s 100th-year celebration.
Sometimes people talk about art and science like they live in totally separate rooms. But actually, they can be great teammates. Artists think about color, shape, texture, and feeling. Scientists and engineers think about materials, patterns, forces, and how things work. When you put those ideas together, you can design something beautiful and clever.
Imagine making a sculpture from paper, fabric, wood, or recycled materials. You might ask art questions, like, “What story does this shape tell?” And you might ask science questions, like, “Will this stand up? Is it balanced? What happens if I bend it?”
That is the spirit of STEAM: trying, noticing, changing, and creating. You do not have to choose between being artistic or scientific. Your brain can be both.
STORY 3: Reno Kids Build Light-Up Summer Circuits
Our third story glows.
At The Discovery museum in Reno, visitors were invited to design a summer-themed decoration that used a circuit to light an LED. An LED is a tiny light that can shine when electricity flows through it the right way.
A circuit is like a path for electricity. If the path is complete, electricity can move and the light can turn on. If the path has a gap, the light usually stays off. That means circuit projects are perfect for testing and improving.
Maybe a kid made a paper sun, a beach scene, a lemonade cup, or a summer night sky—and then added a little LED sparkle. If the light did not turn on the first time, that was not a failure. That was a clue. Builders could check the battery, the wires, the direction of the LED, or where things touched.
This is one of the best parts of engineering: you get to ask, “What can I change?” Then you try again.
And at the end, kids could take home their own working STEAM creation. A small glowing decoration can remind us of a big idea: learning often happens when we test, fix, and try one more time.
