A 700-Year Surprise in Halley’s Comet’s Story

May 14, 2026

Scientists are sharing a new idea about the long history of Halley’s Comet, a famous space visitor that can grow a glowing tail when it travels closer to the Sun. A comet is made of ice, dust, and rocky bits—often described like a giant “dirty snowball” in space.

Researchers say a medieval monk named Eilmer of Malmesbury may have noticed the comet’s pattern long before Edmond Halley did. The idea is that Eilmer compared comet sightings from the years 989 and 1066, connecting clues across a huge stretch of time.

We still call it Halley’s Comet because Edmond Halley famously used math and old records to predict that the comet would return. Getting that prediction right showed how powerful careful calculations and good notes can be.

This story shows how science can build over many generations. Observations, records, and math can pass like a relay race from one person to the next—and the sky keeps offering the same big patterns for anyone who takes the time to watch closely.
