Five kiwi birds made a special visit to New Zealand’s Parliament in Wellington for the first time. Parliament is a serious place where adults make big decisions, so seeing shy, fluffy kiwi there was a big, cheerful moment.

Kiwi are unique birds: they can’t fly, they have whisker-like feathers near their beaks, and they often come out at night. For more than 100 years, kiwi had disappeared from the Wellington area, which made their return feel extra meaningful.

A community team called the Capital Kiwi Project worked to help bring kiwi back. They protected places where kiwi can live, helped keep them safe from animals that might bother them, and supported kiwi families as chicks grew up. The project has released about 250 kiwi, and many chicks are surviving.

The Parliament visit mattered because it showed that careful, steady work can help nature recover. It’s also a reminder to think patiently about big problems: when people team up, protect habitats, and keep going for years, the results can be real—and even a little adorable.
