Rare Mountain Bongos Get Help Returning to Kenya

May 25, 2026

A rare antelope called the mountain bongo—striped like it’s wearing forest pajamas—needs help. There are fewer than about 100 left in the wild, and it lives in leafy mountain forests.

In this update, four male mountain bongos were moved back to Kenya as part of a plan to rebuild the wild population. Experts work carefully to keep the animals healthy and comfortable as they travel and settle in.

Conservation teams also use breeding plans, which are like a careful long-term project to help more bongos be born over time. Moving animals can help when habitats get smaller or when it’s hard for animals to find mates.

It’s smart to ask gentle, curious questions about stories like this: What does an animal need to feel safe in a new place? And how can people work together—like zoos and wildlife rangers—to protect a species’ home?
