A Super-Rare Stegosaurus Skull Is Found in Spain

May 18, 2026

Scientists in Spain found an unusually complete stegosaur skull, and that’s exciting because stegosaur heads are delicate and often don’t fossilize in one piece. Finding a skull like this is a bit like discovering a missing puzzle piece that usually disappears.

The skull belonged to Dacentrurus armatus, a plated dinosaur that lived around 150 million years ago. That time is so far back that it helps scientists imagine what Earth was like long before people were around.

A skull can reveal lots of clues: where muscles attached, how the jaws moved, and what kinds of food the dinosaur could eat. When scientists compare skulls from different species, they can better understand how dinosaur groups are related—like building a giant family tree.

Stegosaurs are famous for back plates and tail spikes, but their faces are often a mystery. This fossil helps fill in that missing part of the story and shows how rock layers can act like time capsules, saving details from an ancient world.
