A Robot “Mechanic” for Satellites in Space

May 27, 2026

A new idea could help satellites last longer: a robot “mechanic” in space. Satellites are important tools that help with things like watching weather, sending TV and internet signals, and studying Earth.

Sometimes satellites get old or develop small issues, such as a part that doesn’t move quite right or a sensor that needs adjusting. Because satellites are far above Earth, it’s not easy to send a person to fix them.

The concept is a robotic spacecraft that can travel to satellites—especially ones in geosynchronous orbit—and do checkups. Geosynchronous orbit is a special path where a satellite goes around Earth at the same speed Earth spins, so it stays over the same spot.

If a robot can inspect, adjust, and possibly upgrade parts, satellites could be used for a longer time. That could mean less space junk and more value from the tools already launched—like choosing to repair and reuse instead of replacing things right away.
