Scientists Found 1,121 New Ocean Species in One Year

May 20, 2026

Scientists announced they identified 1,121 ocean species that were new to science in a single year. These living things were already in the ocean, but people hadn’t officially discovered, described, and recorded them yet.

This happens because the ocean is enormous, and the deep sea is difficult to explore. Researchers use ships, cameras, nets, and sometimes robot explorers to reach places that are dark, cold, and far from shore.

Among the discoveries were a deep-sea “ghost shark” and a worm living in a glass-sponge structure. Glass sponges can look like delicate, twisty shapes, and some animals use them like a safe little home.

The scientists also used workshops to help experts identify and record discoveries faster, so the information can be shared. Naming and recording species is like making a detailed map of life—it helps scientists understand ecosystems and how ocean habitats stay healthy.
