Tonight’s Sky Show: A Total Lunar Eclipse Can Turn the Moon Copper-Red

March 2, 2026

Overnight March 2 to March 3, 2026, many people in North America can watch a total lunar eclipse. You don’t need a telescope—just a safe place to look up and, if you’re lucky, a clear sky.

A lunar eclipse happens when Earth moves between the Sun and the Moon. Earth blocks the Sun’s direct light from hitting the Moon. During “totality,” the Moon is fully inside Earth’s darkest shadow, which sounds like it would make the Moon disappear.

But Earth’s air bends some sunlight into the shadow. Earth’s atmosphere also acts like a filter, scattering more blue-ish light and letting more red-ish light through, so the Moon can glow a coppery red—like a sunset color painted across it. The whole eclipse lasts for hours, while totality is under an hour (about 58 minutes).

A careful way to watch is to notice changes over time: check the Moon’s color every few minutes as Earth’s shadow slides across it. Bringing a blanket can help you stay comfy while you practice being patient and observant—two great skills for science.
