Underwater Robot Finds the Busiest Coral Reef Spots

May 14, 2026

Scientists built an underwater robot named CUREE that can both “look and listen” on coral reefs. It uses cameras and underwater microphones, kind of like a snorkeler who can take pictures and also has super-hearing for ocean sounds.

Coral reefs can be surprisingly noisy, with animals that crunch, pop, or click. By recording reef sounds and taking photos, CUREE can help map small “hotspots”—areas where lots of animals are especially active.

These maps matter because they can help people protect reefs more wisely. Instead of guessing where the most important activity is happening, scientists can point to specific locations where reef life is busiest.

It also helps researchers think about how reef “neighborhoods” work together, with different creatures doing different jobs. Listening as well as looking is a smart reminder: sometimes the best clues about nature aren’t just what we see, but also what we hear.
