A Satellite Took a Super-Close Picture of the Hubble Space Telescope

April 27, 2026

A WorldView Legion satellite took a rare, super-close picture of the Hubble Space Telescope—while both were in space. The photo was taken from about 61.8 kilometers away. That sounds very far, but for space photography it’s more like being across a big park than across an entire city.

Hubble is a powerful telescope that orbits Earth above much of our atmosphere, which helps it see more clearly. It has helped scientists learn about faraway galaxies and about stars being born. Getting sharp images from space takes machines that can point very steadily even while moving quickly around Earth.

The picture was shared as part of celebrating Hubble’s 36th birthday. Hubble launched on April 24, 1990, and it’s still working and sending down beautiful images.

This story is a reminder that science is often a team effort. Engineers, scientists, and space technology all work together—so we can understand more about the universe, one careful picture at a time.
